Gitanjali has created a device that she believes is faster and cheaper to detect lead in drinking water. Gitanjali Rao, the seventh builder from Colorado, was named "America’s top Young Scientist" with a $ 25,000 reward
According to his invention, her invention was inspired by a water crisis in Flint, Michigan, where cost cutting measures led to contaminated drinking water containing lead and other toxins.
"I intend to use bulk to develop a device so it can be quickly available on the market," she said.
Rao, who attended STEM School in Highlands Ranch, Colorado, also received 3 months of sponsorship with Kathleen Shafer, a researcher of experts who develop new plastic technologies after winning the idea of the invention presented a young researcher at 3M Discovery Exhibits, an annual Young Scientist and Engineering Student Competition for university students in the United States in 2008.
Shafer said: “Gitanjali’s concept was at a very early stage at the beginning of our mentorship. She had thought of this idea earlier this year, only a few weeks before the submission deadline,”
