The Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri hosted the 29th quarterly meeting of the Association of Bursars of Polytechnics and Colleges of Technology in Nigeria.
The meeting which was termed BURSCON 2016 saw the gathering of bursars of various schools NBTE representatives and others at the occasion.
The leader of the bursar conference Mr. Adepoju Sina Omotayo in his opening remarks thanked the management for their warm hospitality. He said that he is always at home at the Federal Polytechnic Nekede and always like to associate with the school. He noted that their meeting is to brainstorm and fashion out the best way to make accountability in our institutions as easy as possible.
He thanked the rector for nice accommodation and urge her to continue in her giant developmental strides which has made the polytechnic one of the best in the country.
In his address the bursar of the institution Chief A. N. Obi informed the members that this is the second time he is hosting his colleagues since his appointment as the bursar of the institution. Chief A. N. Obi expressed his sincere gratitude to the rector Dr. (Mrs.) C. U. Njoku he also thanked. He said that the BURSCON conference is not an opportunity for recreation rather a cross fertilization of ideas networking and collaboration on various technical and administrative issues facing the bursars, the institution and the education sector as a whole.
The bursar said that this is the time that innovation ideas and new perspectives are needed to address the challenges at declining funding financial sustainability, restricted autonomy, compliance facing bursars and the institutions.
Chief A. N. Obi informed the finance officers of their main task is to sustain the mandate of the institutions through improved efficiency in management of resources and provide expert advice to the chief executive and management.
He thanked Sir Chieh Eche- secretary who is an alumnus of Federal Polytechnic Nekede and others he equally recognized the role of the institution alumni staff unions (SSANIP, NASU, ASUP, CTLS) and others for making the occasion great. In her opening address, the rector of the institution Dr. (Mrs.) Cele U. Njoku thanked the BURSCON 2016 for choosing the Institution to host the meeting and this is the second time in her tenure that she is hosting men and women of charge of funds and financial service in the system.
Dr. (Mrs.) C. U. Njoku went memory lane on the history of the institution which took off as collage of technology through Imo State government edit No 16 of 1978 and 1987 the college was renamed the polytechnic Nekede and was taken over by the federal government in April 1993. She informed the audience that in the institutions 38 years’ history it has witnessed tremendous growth in staff, student, infrastructure and academic programmes.
The rector pointed out the problems facing the institutions in Nigeria such as decline in funding, paucity of independent revenue, issue of non-budgeted staff union claim, migration etc. She also noted evasion of payment of school fees by student through fraudulent practices.
Dr. (Mrs.) C. U. Njuko challenged the Bursar's to explore new and innovative ways to improve internal generated revenue. Block all forms of revenue leakages and holistic ways of managing online fees collections without hitches and also device a mechanism for detecting and sanctioning student who are defrauding institution through cybercrime.
She stated that institutions appreciate their immense contribution which has helped in the smooth running of various institutions.
The rector thanked FedPoNek BURSCON 2016 for a very successful conference and for their invaluable contributions to growth of polytechnic education in school.
