This may be bad news for you if you are accessing an account with a Netflix owner or paying a Netflix subscription together, as Netflix is considering blocking the password feature for account sharing.
According to the latest reports, users (not all) have started receiving notifications asking to check if they live with the account holder. Users are then asked to use the code sent to the account holder via text or email to continue.
The message states: “If you don’t live with the owner of this account, you need your own account to keep watching.”
Some Netflix users who were apparently tapping into other people’s accounts turned to Twitter to share news of an apparent crackdown along with posts of notice telling them they need to be subscribers to keep watching the service.
Netflix included an offer to try the service free for 30 days, according to a copy posted on Twitter.
Netflix says that “hundreds” of tests are done every year with customers on this issue. And that this test is to ensure that those who are using Netflix, are authorized to do so
A statement from the company said: “This test is designed to help ensure that people using Netflix accounts are authorized to do so.”
According to the Netflix terms of service, account details should “not be shared with individuals beyond your household”.
Nearly a third of subscribers to television streaming services such as Netflix share their passwords with people who don’t live with them, according to a survey last year by consulting firm Magid.
We don’t currently know if the company will proceed with the plan to clamp down the password sharing feature or not.
Right now, competition is high, from rivals on a global scale such as Amazon Prime Video, Disney +, which puts pressure on adding new subscribers, keeping existing customers happy with the service, and overall revenue growth.
