Uganda is on its way to be among the first country in Africa to connect with 5G technology. This is coming as Chinese telecommunications equipment giant ZTE partners MTN to carry out the first 5G network trial in Uganda. This will be the first of its kind in the East Africa region.
The trial, which is scheduled to be carried out on Friday, will have the Ugandan Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda in attendance. In a statement, the PM expressed support for the development of new technology and hoped it will provide solutions and improve the way of life in the country.
The chief executive officer MTN Uganda how also spoke on the development, said the 5G technology would have increased speed and capacity with exact wireless connections but similar to fiber optic cable experience. This would enable easier wireless connections compared to running fiber optic cables to every facility or home.
According to him;
In the next two to three years, we will embark on massive commercial rollout of the technology.
He also noted that advancements like telemedicine will be easier when there is a real-time connection.
Yi Yahua, ZTE Corporation vice president for Southern Africa, said ZTE is fully supportive to MTN Uganda’s strategy to tap into the potential of modern mobile technologies to serve this country better and move forward with 5G industrialization.
With the trial, Uganda is the third country in Africa to have 5G technology after South Africa and Nigeria.
