Well, in similar news, the Uganda government has only made a controversial move towards regulating social media on its own, and we hope our government does not do the same in Nigeria.
On Wednesday, the Uganda parliament legalized a tax of 200 shillings (equivalent to US $ 0.05 or N20) per day for top-level users who post content that bypassing traditional distributors. It simply means that users of social media such as Facebook, Skype, Snapchat etc. In Uganda will charge N20 every day.
The directive will come into force as of July 2018. However, the way in which this tax will be applied and collected in practice is not mentioned in the new law, leaving a deep gap in legislation.
According to Uganda Finance Minister David Bahati, the purpose of legislation was simply to generate revenue for "public services". But it is not in accordance with this statement that President Museveni, who wrote the Ministry of Finance in early March, called for tax introduction as a way to deal with the consequences of "gossip" online. What does public service and gossip have in common?
In short, by the following month, Ugandans will pay about 7200 per year only for the use of social media to end the online gossip. And in the meantime, it should be noted that this fee does not apply to the internet subscription, but also takes care of the data from your own pocket.
