A new feature called "Speed Label" will be added to smartphones that currently use the latest version of Android 8.1 through OTA updates. This feature provides information on the speed of public Wi-Fi hotspots, enabling you to choose the fastest Wi-Fi network you can connect to when you have multiple options.
The installation should start this week. When distribution is distributed, open Wi-Fi networks will have four (4) categories:
- Slow: If you can use a Wi-Fi connection, you can make phone calls and send SMS messages.
- OK: You can read web pages, use social media, and play music.
- Fast: You can stream most of your videos.
- Very Fast: You can stream movies of very high quality.
This feature will work on smaller devices because only Google Pixel, Google Pixel XL, Google Pixel 2, Google Pixel 2 XL, Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P use Android 8.1 at the time of writing. The speed tag will be enabled by default. If you want to disable it, go to Settings> Network & Internet> Wi-Fi> Wi-Fi Settings> Advanced> Network Evaluation Provider> Nothing.
It should be noted that protecting your Wi-Fi passwords will not show speed estimates, and network administrators may also refuse to display speed data.
