At about some weeks ago some incidences were reported in the daily newspapers which happened as a result of religious intolerance and illiteracy.

The first incident was said to had occured on May 29 in which one Mr. Methodus Emmanuel, a 24-year old trader from Pandogari, Niger state, was attacked and killed by mob of youths on an allegation that he posted a blasphemous statement about Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) on the social media. Three persons were said to have lost their lives in that sad incidence.

The second i ncident occured in Kano when a 74-year-old trader was also killed by mob at Kofar Wambai market in Kano on June 3 for alleged blasphemy.

The third incident occured in Zaria Tuesday, June 7,when some thugs disrupted some members of shi’ites who were distributing free food to the needy around Gyellesu and other places in Zaria.

According to Douglas Anele,” Religious intolerance or fanaticism is the inability of an adherent to acknowledge, accomodate and accept the right of others to live by another faith different from his own.” The above acts is ungodly and totally condemnable because it contradicts the teaching of Islam.

Islam does not allowed its followers to take laws into their hands rather, it urges them to forward cases to the proper authorities for proper measure. Among the moral values that Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) preached and lived by was tolerance. According to one tradition, a bedouin urinated inside a mosque but the prophet stopped his companion from harming him.

He issued an order that a bucketfull of water should be poured on the affected places. Another tradition also stated that the Prophet (P.B.U.H) hosted a delegation of Christians of Najran (in Yemen) in the saadah mosque at Madina and when it was time for their prayers, they stood up in the mosque, Messenger of Allah (P.B.U.H) said: “let them pray.” they prayed heading east. While they were praying the Prophet said to his companions “do not touch them.”

Religious symbols

Similarly, during the caliphate of Umar (R.A), when Jerusalem was conquered, Caliph Umar (R.A) granted the non-muslims liberty to live and practice their religion. He also banned the Muslims to neither demolish their Churches nor touch their religious symbols (i.e.cross). However, he also declared that neither should they be abhored because of their religion and nor harm should be inflicted on them.

Historically, Ethiopia was said to have never witness any religious violence because the Ethiopians had learn to respect each others faith and tolerate one another. Therefore, Muslims clerics need to rise up and admonish their followers based on tolerance and peaceful co-existence with other to avoid religious riots.

Islamic organizations should also launch out campaigns against religious intolerance. Youths should also be knowledgeable based on Islamic education to avoid taking laws into their hands. Government should also ensure that whoever disguises, committing crime should face the wrath of the law.
