ABSTRACT
This project research work is aimed at enlightening, analyzing and revisiting the concept of data Base Management system across every organization in the world. The significance, needs and uses of data base management system to organization will also be deliberated upon in this project work. It is being carried out to highlight the efficiency of Hotel Management System. It highlights the background definition of Hotel Management System in any ideal establishment, including the effective control, management of data by appropriate software program in terms of the use of Hotel Management System and It also emphasizes that very fact of Hotel Management System that information management is the cornerstone to effective management. The project work will also look at how a database managements system can be established, the element of Hotel Management System requirements of DBMS, the maintenance and security of Hotel Management System. It will also consider how to set up a security Hotel Management System, the requirement of setting up the security database and the access control on database. The new system will be developed using HTML,CSS,PHP,JAVASCRIPT AND MYSQL.
CHAPTER ONE
1.0 INTRODUCTION
Computer science is concerned with the study of data, its representation and transformation by a digital computer. A computer is mostly an electronic device that accepts data as input store it internally, process it to produce information.
Therefore, when a computer processes data, it is actually performing a number of separate functions as follows:
INPUT: The computer accepts data from the outside through keyboard, mouse, joystick, and diskette etc. for processing. STORAGE: The computer holds data internally before, during and after processing.
PROCESSING: The computer performs arithmetic and string manipulations, operations on the data it holds within.
OUTPUT: The computer produces the processed data (information) for external use.
However, data is one of the most essential resources of any
Organization. Without data an organization would not be able to perform quite a number of its responsibilities and it would add adverse effect on the ability to its decision making and taking process. The above stated fact gives rise to the necessity of database, which provides relevant and sufficient data to its users as at when needed. Database can be viewed as a library which contains data of various forms, sizes and importance.
The need to control and manage data judiciously entails Hotel Management System as a means of smooth administration of data.
Hotel Management System can be described as a set of complex software that constructs, expands and maintains the database. It also provides the controlled interface, the user and the data in the base. Meanwhile, the objective of database is to provide a reliable up- to-date demand for information.
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
ROCKVIEW Hotel is an indigenous Hotel owned by Rockview Hotels limited under the chairmanship of chief (Dr) Vincent Amaechi Obianodo, MON.
The Hotel started her business in Abuja, Nigeria in 1995 with 106 luxurious rooms including suites. It was officially commissioned on 28th September 1996 by then FCT Ministries Lt J.T Useni.
The rooms are divided into categories
1. Superior Room
2. Superior king
3. Executive Room
4. Classic Room
5. Queen suite
6. Ambassadorial suite
It also offers the following facilities
• Recreation
• Banquet services
• Pastry shop
• Internet Wifi
• Security services
• Laundry services
• 24hrs car hire
• Business center
• Live Band
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
There is steady setback in much business organization due to Hotel Management Systems. Although, the concept of Hotel Management System has been operational since the evolution of computer.
For efficiency to be made in a system there must be that priority to check-mate, the risk of losing customers, which equally makes the system to improve further in its capabilities.
There are some certain problems that face any organization, without a strong databank and Hotel Management System. These problems include the following;
1. Unsteady electricity supply
2. Lack of customers’ comfort ability and trust on the organization
3. Security level of the organization
4. Slow pace in decision making.
All these problems will be less difficult with a good Database
Management System in place to provide appropriate solutions and answers to the above stated problem.
1.3 OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
The research is aimed at enlightening organizations and analyzing the need and importance of Hotel Management System in every hotel business in particular, as well as other organizations or firms in general.
The importance of the database to the business organizations cannot be over-emphasized and under estimated. For instance, in the administrative department of an organization, there is need for the computerization of staff employee number, date of employment. Employee annual salary, that is contained in the file oriented system. These needs to be read, updated and maintained. A good management system will be of great importance in the achievement of these operations without much difficulties and complexities.
In general, this work is aimed at using. Databank and database management to realize the following, targets.
(1) Increase efficiency in performance
(2) Better customer services
(3) Expansion of business, based on system specification and user requirement
(4) Improved management role to enhance decision making.
1.4 SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY
The complete implementation of this work will introduce a new trend in hotel operations and management systems. It will also give room for the following revolutions
(1) A good data network and utilization, within the organization.
(2) Improved users identification and personal data access control with a user profile, to facilitate the prevention of unscrupulous individuals from tampering with the customers’ properties as well as confidential information about the organization.
(3) To facilitate the organization’s services and information dissemination in order to face future challenges.
1.5 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
This research project is limited to the Database Management
System of ROCKVIEW HOTELS, OWERRI. Which is the pivot System of investigation. The study/research carried out in this organization is aimed at computerizing the existing system with a view of reverting the shortcomings of the organization. Thus, as a matter of fact, the study is strictly reflecting on Hotel Management System and its automation.
1.6 LIMITATIONS
Virtually, every research project encompasses one limitation or the other. These limitations prevent the researcher from fully exhausting all that is required to unfold or offer. This particular project is none the least an exception to the said limitations. Some of the major militating factors are highlighted below;
(i) Time constraint: owning to the limited time available in accomplishing the write-up, more information could not be obtained. The impact of time constraint cannot be under emphasized.
(ii) Access to classified information: the apparent reluctance on the part of the official of Rockview in releasing certain classified information required by the researcher constituted a threat to the success of the study.
(iii) Dearth of finance: lack of finance contributed to the limitations of the research work, considering transits to and fro the station.
(iv) Case study: during the process of adopting a case study for this research project, a minor (deliberate) error occurred due to incurred biased sampling.
