ABSTRACT
Online examination system is a
network based application for technical evaluation of student’s performance.
The purpose of this project work is to develop an online examination system to
be used by the Aptitude Test and Admission Department of Federal Polytechnic
Nekede Owerri for conducting Aptitude Test. The manual system for conducting
Aptitude test precisely Post Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination posses
a lot of problems which include the following: data duplication, time consuming,
slow retrieval of data, and prone to error due to human limitations. This
system entitled “Online Examination System” is a network based Software Developed
by using Visual Basic.net (Vb.net) technology for its front end (Interface) and
Microsoft Access as the software data repository. When the new system is fully
implemented, the following are the outcomes: Fast retrieval of data, error free
and efficiency, improved speed of the operation.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.0 INTRODUCTION
The advent of computer system and
other information and communication technology system really brought in the
idea of globalization. Computer is applied in almost all areas of human
endeavor. Some of the areas of computer based information technology include
office automation and computer publishing, just- in – time (JIT) production techniques to reduce cost and
improve quality, electronic shopping and funds transfer, computer, computer
controlled training system, decision support system(DSS) that facilitate real
time control of equipment’s and computer aided instructor.
Due
to all these mentioned areas of computer application and more, computer has now
been accepted and used by so many organization and individuals for various
purposes. It is believed that computer is an agent which improves productivity
and enhances competition. The topic of this project research is Online
Examination System for post UTM examination of Federal Polytechnic Nekede Owerri.
it is important to embark on this project work and complete it so that the
manual procedure of conducting examination(POST UTME) which is slow in
operation, error prone, inefficient, slow retrieval of data, data duplication
and inconsistency of data which can be replaced with an automated system that
is more faster and error free.
Over
the years, several efforts have been made to mitigate the burden on the academic
management department when it comes to conducting post utm examination. By
definition on examination is an assessment intended to measure the knowledge,
skill and aptitude of students in a particular field of study.
In
educational institutions, the examination conducted and the score of the
students produced are used by the academic management department to select
students for admission. In the course of this research, an intensive
investigation was carried out on how Federal Polytechnic Nekede conducts their
Post Utm Examination. From my finding, it appears that the current method
adopted in conducting Post Utm Examination needs improvement and can be
achieved by the introduction of a computer system that is a software system.
1.1
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Examination is not a real test of
true knowledge, but examination bodies have been using it without Apology.
Federal Polytechnic Nekede Owerri is
a Federal Institution established by the Edict Number 16 of 1978. It opened for
class on 15th December, 1978 at a temporary site in the premise of
the government trade center along Egbu Road, Owerri with initial of 275
students in 1980, the collage of Education as was its name was then moved to
its permanent site in Nekede,Owerri. The name of the collage was later changed
to Polytechnic Nekede. In 1987 by Edict Number 6 of 1987, it was further
renamed Federal Polytechnic Nekede Owerri by the Federal amendment of decree in
1st January 1993.
Federal
Polytechnic Nekede have Limited venue for Post Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.
Federal Polytechnic Nekede with over ten thousand students has five faculties
presently and they include School of Engineering Technology (SET), School of
Industrial and Applied Science (SIAS), School of Humanities and Social Science
(SHSS), School of Business and Management Technology (SBMT), School of
Environmental and Design Technology (SEDT). Automation of the POST UTM
Examination involves the experts reasoning process to solve the problem involve
in the manual POST UTM Examination by using certain program validation in the
program properties to check for some criteria.
In
Federal Polytechnic Nekede, examination (POST UTME) is been conducted manually for
candidates. They started with the use of pen and paper, but this could not
solve the problem of exam malpractice, delay in the release of result and errors
due to human limitations, hence the use of OMR (Optical Mark Recognition) form.
This system was introduced to avoid exam malpractice, errors due to human
limitations, and delay in release of result. The use of OMR Form solved some of
the problems encountered in conducting examinations, but could not solve most
of the cardinal problems. This underlines the necessity of the introduction of
automation in examination System.
The researcher embarks on this
project titled “Online Examination System” to change the manual procedure (Pen
and Paper, OMR Form) of conducting examination (POST UTME) in an Educational
Institutions.
This Online Examination System will
make use of multi-choice questions and answer sessions where a candidate must
specify the correct option to obtain a score. This study not only intends to
improve the academic standard of Federal Polytechnic Nekede, but also intends
to enlighten candidates (prospective students) in what is obtainable in the
society.
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The Post Utm Examination as conducted
manually in Federal Polytechnic Nekede long before now. This manual procedure
from investigation has many problems due to increasing number of candidates
enrolling for the examination (POST UTME) and some human’s limitations. The
problems include:
1. Examination venue capacity
constraints that leads to lack of comfort for examination candidates.
2. Delay in the release of candidate
result
3. Cost implication of printing
examination manual.
4. High rate of examination malpractice
is associated with the current system.
5. Errors due to human Limitations.
1.3 OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
with the numerous problems
confronting the institution of Federal Polytechnic Nekede Owerri, this project
intend to Design and Implement an examination system precisely a software that
will facilitate the manual procedure of conducting examination (POST UTME). The
aim of this research projects include:
1. To facilitate the development of
information technology.
2. To reveal the use and technology of
networks to the user.
3. To provide alternative way of
attaining knowledge.
4. To implement a system which reduces
examination malpractice?
5. To implement a system which produce
fast release of result.
6. To implement a system to stop errors
due to human limitation.
7. To implement a system which takes
accurate time keeping of examination.
1.4 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
The scope of this project will be to
design, build easy to use and reliable software for Federal Polytechnic Nekede
Owerri Post Utm Examination. This includes the full automation of the system as
the only alternative. Hence, the encompasses all the objectives and provides a
stream line strategy for which those objectives would be achieved. The scope of
this work extends to the following range and deals with the total automation of
the following:-
·
The
project is going to automate the section responsible for accreditating
candidates that enrolled for the examination.
·
The
project will also automate the section responsible for writing and timing the
examination.
·
The
project will be able to randomize questions
·
The
project will be able to create a database for result storage.
1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The significance of this study is to
reduce the bearest minimum problem and stress associated with the use of manual
system to conduct POST UTM Examination in Federal Polytechnic Nekede and
related institutions. It will also serve as a resource material for subsequent
researchers in this area or related field.
1.6 LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY
The rate of technology is moving at
rapid speed and not everybody understand how some of the tools used for this Online
Examination System process are used .some people find it difficult to operate
on the computer, especially due to lack of computer skill. This project was
fatal with a number of restricting factors which made the work not exceed the
scope defined for it. The most pressing factor includes:
·
Fluctuating
power supply.
·
Lack
of finance as the researcher is sponsoring the research.
·
Limited
time is given for the project work to be completed.
·
Lack
of cooperation from some of the staff of the admission unit of Federal
Polytechnic Nekede even on trivial issues.
