A large number of bank customers besieged their various banks yesterday November 6, to have Biometric Verification Number (BVN) linked to their various accounts. This has been the case in most banks since BVN deadline elapsed on Friday, October 31. For most banks, BVN registration has been the major order of the day since the timeline expired.
Most of the bank customers expressed disappointment over the failure of the banks to link their accounts to their BVN while attending to the impatient crowd was a tough task for the bank officials. Blog Mall Nigeria observed that another group of account holders who failed to beat the deadline also besieged banks to try their luck just like others who could not have BVN linked to their accounts.
Long queues were seen in most of the banks while attending to the perplexed crowd was quite overwhelming for the bank officials. As a result, some customers after filling their details in the BVN registration forms were advised to leave with the assurance that the numbers will be ready in 24 hours. Some of the customers who experienced delay lamented at the time loss. They describe the exercise as frustrating due to large number of people waiting to be registered.
A particular customer who identified himself as Charles Ugwu claimed he had done his BVN through Zenith Bank, and submitted it few weeks ago to link it with its UBA account but was surprised the account was blocked. Similar to Charles’ ordeal, this has been the experience of many customers in recent times. Some of the customers suggested a kind of synergy between banks where once a customer obtain BVN in a bank, there would be a means to link it with other bank accounts without visiting the respective banks. A bank staff said the delay and hitch experienced is caused by the failure of the account holders to submit their BVN as at when due. He lamented that quite a lot of them waited till the deadline elapsed before doing the needful. BVN is an initiative of the CBN to give every customer in the Nigerian banking system a uhique identification number that can be verified across all banks in Nigeria. It is also a centralised biometric meant to address issues of identity theft and fraud. The enrollment process for acquiring the compulsory number began last year and as at November 31, the CBN revealed that 32 million active bank accounts are yet to have BVN. The deadline was initially slated for June 30 but was extended to October 31 to facilitate a smooth completion of the registration exercise. Meanwhile, the CBN has urged bank customers to be wary of individuals alerting them on the deactivation of their bank accounts due to uncompleted Bank Verification Number (BVN). The apex bank revealed some hoodlums are taking advantage of the platform to fleece unsuspecting account holders. A statement released by the bank’s director of corporate communications, Ibrahim Mu’azu, on Monday stated that CBN has extended BVN timeline for Nigerians In diaspora.
