China has introduced new regulations to control the distribution of DeepFake news and videos in the country. Deepfake technologies can be used to create and distribute false information, and is seen by governments around the world as a threat. Technology works with artificial intelligence, where people in videos can be manipulated to produce fictitious messages and sounds that look real. It can be used to cover celebrity images on other people's bodies, misleading viewers with very compelling results.
Deepfake technology become popular in China when a smartphone face-swapping app known as Zao topped the list of free entertainment apps in the Apple App Store within two days of its debut. The app allowed users to swap their faces with film or TV characters with very convincing results.
The new China regulation published by the Cyberspace Administration of China, comes into effect from January 1, 2020. It will require providers and users of online video news and audio information services to put clear labels on any content that involves new technologies.
