MTN claims to have achieved download speeds of more than 20 gigabits per second on its first 5th generation (5G) technology test.
"This is the best result on the mobile network in Africa," the provider said in a statement on Monday.
Said, was ready to apply technology for commercial purposes but could not do it before accessing the additional spectrum.
The Communication Body Regardless of South Africa, which regulates the spectrum, it has not yet allocated spectrum for 4G infrastructure, TechCentral reported, forcing operators to allocate 2G and 3G frequencies.
Director of Technology and Innovation at MTN, South Africa, Giovanni Chiarelli, said: "There is no doubt that 5G will offer consumers higher speeds and lower latencies, but we need more resources.
MTN has a 4G license in Nigeria and can consider introducing technology to the country in the near future.
MTN worked with Ericsson's network equipment provider in its 5G test and found that technology was at least 100 times faster than 4G.
